Canadian Rockies Tourism Boom Forces Urgent Visitor Management Strategy
Rising tourism across the Canadian Rockies is pushing officials and park authorities to develop a powerful new strategy aimed at tackling overcrowding, environmental pressure, and growing visitor challenges throughout the region.
Popular destinations such as Lake Louise, Moraine Lake, and Kananaskis Country continue attracting millions of tourists every year, creating increasing frustration among residents concerned about traffic congestion, overcrowded trails, and damage to natural landscapes.
Tourism experts say the issue can no longer be managed by individual agencies working separately.
A new initiative known as “destination stewardship” seeks to improve coordination between governments, tourism organizations, and park authorities throughout the Bow Valley region.
Grant Canning, a former Banff councillor and tourism management researcher leading the project, warned that tourism growth is unavoidable and that authorities must focus on smarter long-term management rather than trying to reduce visitor numbers entirely.
He explained that restricting access in one popular location often pushes tourists into nearby communities and parks, creating new overcrowding problems elsewhere.
Officials from Parks Canada and Alberta Parks have already experienced this challenge as changing visitor policies in major attractions redirected crowds toward surrounding areas.
Canning emphasized that understanding how visitors move throughout the Rockies is “monumentally important” because tourism activity directly impacts wildlife, infrastructure, and fragile mountain ecosystems.
Local leaders also stressed the need for stronger collaboration. Tanya Foubert said communities across the region need a shared vision to balance tourism growth with sustainability and quality of life for residents.
The proposed strategy has already gained support from the Town of Canmore, Tourism Canmore Kananaskis, Alberta Parks, and several regional agencies. Additional partners include Parks Canada, the Town of Banff, the Kananaskis Improvement District, and the Municipal District of Bighorn.
As tourism numbers continue breaking records across the Rockies, officials hope the new coordinated approach will help protect one of Canada’s most iconic natural regions while still welcoming visitors from around the world.
