Iraq Renews Condemnation Over Gulf Drone Attacks

Ali al-Zaidi has renewed Iraq’s strong condemnation of recent drone attacks targeting Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, describing the incidents as criminal acts that threaten regional stability.

The statement came after the UAE reported that a drone launched from Iraqi territory sparked a fire near the perimeter of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant. Saudi authorities also confirmed that air defense systems intercepted and destroyed three drones entering Saudi airspace from Iraq.

Zaidi announced the formation of an investigative committee tasked with examining the circumstances surrounding the attacks. He emphasized Baghdad’s willingness to cooperate closely with Saudi Arabia and the UAE through a joint inquiry aimed at reviewing all available evidence regarding the alleged use of Iraqi territory in the operations.

The Iraqi leader stressed that his country rejects any attempt to use its land or airspace as a launch point for attacks against neighboring or allied nations. He reaffirmed Iraq’s position as a regional partner seeking stability, cooperation, and shared interests across the Middle East.

The incidents unfold amid heightened regional tensions following military strikes launched earlier this year by the United States and Israel against Iran. Tehran later responded with retaliatory actions targeting Israel and American allies in the Gulf region, while tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz further intensified global security concerns.

Although a ceasefire mediated by Pakistan came into effect in April, diplomatic negotiations failed to secure a permanent agreement. Meanwhile, Donald Trump extended the truce indefinitely while maintaining restrictions on vessels linked to Iranian ports passing through the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz.
