Leading Democrats in the United States have expressed strong opposition to reports suggesting President Donald Trump may deploy American troops to seize Iran’s Kharg Island, warning that such a move could deepen U.S. involvement in a prolonged conflict.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Trump’s remarks raised serious concerns that Washington could be drawn further into a war with Iran, despite claims that the conflict is nearing an end. Speaking on the Senate floor, he noted that discussions about taking control of Kharg Island could potentially involve deploying U.S. ground forces.
Schumer criticized the administration’s handling of the situation, arguing that the war had not been effectively concluded and warning that continued escalation would put American service members at risk. He urged Republican lawmakers to resist further military action and support efforts to bring troops home.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries also condemned the proposed approach, describing it as a “reckless and costly war of choice.” He warned that deploying ground forces in the Middle East would contradict earlier commitments to avoid long-term military entanglements in the region.
Jeffries stressed that expanding the conflict would violate promises made to reduce U.S. involvement in foreign wars, particularly in the Middle East, which he described as one of the most volatile regions globally.
The political backlash comes amid ongoing exchanges of military strikes between the United States and Iran, with President Trump warning of additional attacks unless Tehran agrees to a peace arrangement.
