China has imposed sanctions on Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. along with his immediate family, escalating diplomatic tensions between Beijing and Manila. The move follows accusations that Teodoro made statements damaging to China’s interests and bilateral relations.
According to China’s Foreign Ministry, Teodoro repeatedly issued remarks on China that were described as irresponsible and harmful, allegedly undermining cooperation and “sabotaging” ties between the two countries. The sanctions prohibit Teodoro, his spouse, and his child from entering mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao.
In addition, Chinese entities and individuals have been barred from conducting any business, cooperation, or engagement with him and his family.
The announcement came shortly after Teodoro’s participation in the Shangri-La Dialogue security forum in Singapore, where he criticized China over territorial disputes in the South China Sea and accused Beijing of aggressive regional behavior. He also rejected suggestions from Chinese military representatives that the Philippines could act as a proxy for the United States.
Chinese officials strongly condemned his remarks, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stating that his comments undermined mutual trust and harmed China-Philippines relations. She further argued that his statements were contrary to the interests of the Filipino people.
Neither Teodoro nor the Philippine government has issued an immediate response to the sanctions.
Relations between China and the Philippines have continued to worsen amid ongoing disputes in the South China Sea, where both countries claim overlapping maritime territories and regularly accuse each other of provocations.
