Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani is set to travel to Tehran on Thursday to discuss efforts to reduce tensions and encourage dialogue between Iran and the United States.
Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Majed Al Ansari said Sheikh Mohammed would meet several Iranian officials to explore ways to ease tensions and establish conditions for renewed negotiations.
The talks are expected to include the freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz and efforts to restore the waterway to the situation that existed before Feb. 28.
The visit would be Sheikh Mohammed’s first trip to Iran since the US-Iran conflict began following American and Israeli strikes on Iran in late February.
The United States and Iran reached a memorandum of understanding in June with mediation from Pakistan and Qatar, but implementation has remained stalled because of disagreements over the Strait of Hormuz.
The situation worsened after the US resumed military strikes against Iran last month, prompting Tehran to target US military facilities in Arab countries allied with Washington.
