Saudi Arabia’s National Center for Meteorology issued a red alert on Wednesday, warning of heavy rainfall expected in several areas of Mecca province.
The Saudi Civil Defense called on residents to remain highly cautious during the rainfall and follow safety instructions issued by the authorities. People were specifically advised to avoid flooded areas, valleys and dams to reduce the risk of accidents.
The red alert represents the highest level of weather warning in Saudi Arabia and is issued when potentially dangerous conditions require maximum precaution.
Mecca province has experienced unstable weather and varying rainfall levels in recent days. Earlier on Aug. 21, authorities warned of heavy rain in Al-Ardiyat and Al-Qunfudhah, along with strong winds, thunderstorms, hail and possible flash flooding.
