Fuel Demand Rises in Czech Republic Despite High Prices
Demand for fuel in the Czech Republic has increased sharply, even as prices soar, according to the Czech Association of Petroleum Industry and Trade (CAPPO).
Spokesperson Vaclav Loula told Czech Radio that diesel consumption jumped about 25% in March compared to typical levels, while petrol demand rose around 15%. He reassured the public that there is no risk of fuel shortages.
Reasons for Increased Demand
Analysts attribute the surge to motorists stocking up amid rising prices and heightened interest from drivers in neighboring countries where fuel costs are higher.
The disruption in the Strait of Hormuz since early March, caused by the US-Israel conflict with Iran, has further contributed to global oil price increases. Normally, about 20 million barrels of oil pass through the strait daily, representing roughly 20% of the world’s supply.
International Context
US President Donald Trump previously issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Iran, threatening to strike its power plants if the waterway was not reopened. He later extended the timeline, citing ongoing negotiations to ease tensions.
