Israel Faces International Backlash Over Capital Punishment

Slovenia Condemns Israeli Death Penalty Law

Slovenia Condemns Israeli Law Allowing Death Penalty for Palestinian Prisoners

Tanja Fajon, Slovenia’s Foreign Minister, sharply criticized a new Israeli law permitting the death penalty for Palestinian prisoners, describing it as discriminatory and potentially harmful to justice and regional security.

“Introducing the death penalty specifically for Palestinians is clear discrimination,” Fajon wrote on the social media platform X. She stressed that all individuals should face equal accountability for violent acts and warned that capital punishment is not a solution to security challenges.

“Justice cannot exist without fairness, and security cannot be built on discrimination,” she added.

Israeli Parliament Approves Law

Earlier on Monday, the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, approved the legislation in its second and third readings, with 62 votes in favor and 48 against, according to Israeli media.

The law allows Israeli courts to sentence Palestinian prisoners to death. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu supported the measure.

International Response and Concerns

The legislation has drawn criticism from international observers and human rights groups. Analysts predict it will intensify debate over legal fairness, human rights, and the broader conflict in the region.
