China, Russia Coordinate Ahead of UN Vote on Strait of Hormuz
Diplomatic Call Focuses on Fair and Balanced Approach
Top diplomats from Wang Yi and Sergey Lavrov held a phone conversation on Sunday to discuss the upcoming United Nations Security Council vote on a draft resolution concerning the Strait of Hormuz.
During the call, both ministers agreed to maintain fairness on key principles and adopt a balanced and objective stance as permanent members of the United Nations Security Council. They also stressed the need to gain broader international support.
Rising Tensions and Draft Resolution
Earlier this week, Bahrain submitted a draft resolution addressing Iran’s effective restriction of maritime traffic through the strait. The council is expected to vote on the proposal next week.
Meanwhile, Wang urged the council to avoid supporting unauthorized military actions in the Middle East. He warned that continued conflict could worsen instability and create long-term consequences.
Strategic Importance of the Strait
The Strait of Hormuz plays a vital role in global trade. It connects major Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar, and Iraq, to international markets.
Notably, the route handles about 25% of global oil shipments, 20% of liquefied natural gas trade, and nearly 30% of fertilizer exports. For China, around 45% of oil imports and 20% of LNG imports pass through this corridor.
Calls for Ceasefire and Dialogue
Wang emphasized that achieving a ceasefire remains the most effective way to resolve navigation issues in the strait. He reiterated China’s position that dialogue and negotiation should guide solutions to regional conflicts.
Similarly, Lavrov called for an immediate end to military actions. He urged all parties to return to diplomatic channels and address the root causes of the conflict. He also highlighted the importance of the UN Security Council playing a constructive role.
Expanding Cooperation
Both sides agreed to strengthen coordination at international platforms, particularly within the UN framework. They expressed satisfaction with their aligned positions on global issues, including developments related to Iran.
Escalating Regional Conflict
Tensions have intensified since a joint military offensive by the United States and Israel against Iran on February 28. The conflict has resulted in over 1,340 deaths, including senior leadership figures.
In response, Tehran launched drone and missile strikes targeting Israel and neighboring countries hosting US military facilities. It also imposed restrictions on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
