Cybersecurity Incident Disrupts Online Systems at Virginia Schools
23 October 2026
ISTANBUL — A cybersecurity incident disrupted the digital systems of Richmond Public Schools (RPS) in Virginia on Wednesday, affecting several technology services, ABC News reported.
RPS Superintendent Jason Kamras said the incident had not compromised the safety of students or school employees.
In a statement published on the school district’s website, officials confirmed that schools would remain open throughout the week. Lessons would continue through alternative, technology-free methods while the district addressed the disruption.
The district thanked students, parents and staff for their patience and cooperation, warning that some digital services could remain unavailable temporarily.
Kamras said the administration’s main priorities were to support students and employees, determine the cause and extent of the incident, and restore affected systems securely.
He added that the district was working with external cybersecurity specialists and law enforcement agencies to investigate the incident. Officials also pledged to provide updates as verified information became available and contact individuals who might need to take specific action.
Local news outlet The Richmonder reported that the disruption had affected internet access and telephone services. Although internet connectivity remained unavailable, office phones and security cameras were reportedly still operational.
The district continues to address the technical problems while maintaining school operations and investigating the cybersecurity incident.
