Erdogan Says Türkiye Continues Efforts to Promote Peace Worldwide

ANKARA — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday that Türkiye was continuing its diplomatic initiatives to promote peace across multiple regions, including efforts involving Russia-Ukraine prisoner exchanges and mediation in Africa.

In a video address to the 9th Istanbul Mediation Conference, Erdogan emphasized that diplomatic solutions remained possible even in the most complex international disputes. He said successful mediation required determination, courage and a genuine commitment to keeping communication channels open.

The Turkish president reaffirmed Ankara’s dedication to diplomatic engagement despite rising global conflicts, growing geopolitical tensions and declining confidence in international institutions.

Erdogan also criticized the current international system, particularly the structure of the United Nations Security Council. He argued that allowing five permanent members to exercise decisive influence over issues affecting more than 190 countries undermined fairness and weakened international trust.

He further noted that people in Palestine, Lebanon, Sudan and other conflict-affected regions had become increasingly disappointed with the United Nations and its ability to address their suffering.

Erdogan reiterated Türkiye’s willingness to bring opposing parties together, facilitate negotiations and support fair and lasting solutions to international disputes.

He concluded by emphasizing the importance of sustained diplomatic engagement, maintaining that meaningful peace efforts require countries to demonstrate a genuine willingness to negotiate despite difficult circumstances.
