Deadly Earthquake Claims 95+ Lives in Tibet

A devastating earthquake in China’s Tibet region has left at least 95 people dead and many more injured, according to state media reports. The tremor hit a mountainous area in the Tibet Autonomous Region near the Nepalese border, early Tuesday morning at 9:05 a.m., shaking both China and neighboring Nepal.

As rescue teams scramble to provide aid, the impact is still being felt. Several aftershocks followed the initial quake, sending tremors across the region and even reaching Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, where people rushed to evacuate buildings. Shigatse, the nearest city with a population of 640,000, is just a stone’s throw from the epicenter, where the damage is most severe.

The Himalayas, a seismic hotbed, have long been vulnerable to such natural disasters. The region’s history includes the tragic 2015 Nepal earthquake that claimed nearly 9,000 lives. According to seismologist Lok Bijaya Adhikari from Nepal’s National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Center, the force of the quake may have caused further damage to the mountains of eastern Nepal.

In the aftermath, the risk of avalanches and glacial lake outburst floods looms large, especially in high-altitude areas where many locals still reside. Former Nepal Mountaineering Association chief, Ang Tshering Sherpa, cautioned that these natural hazards could worsen, with the earthquake triggering potential disasters in the rugged terrain. Rescue operations are in full swing, but the full extent of the devastation is still unfolding.
