At Least 60 Migrants Feared Dead in Two Shipwrecks Off Libya

June 18, 2025 — Geneva | Tripoli

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported Tuesday that at least 60 migrants are feared dead following two separate shipwrecks off Libya’s coast in the past week.

The first incident occurred on June 12 near the Libyan port of Tripoli. According to the IOM, 21 migrants—including women and children—remain missing. Only five survivors were rescued. The passengers included nationals from Eritrea, Pakistan, Egypt, and Sudan.

The second tragedy took place approximately 35 kilometers (20 miles) off the coast of Tobruk. A sole survivor informed authorities that 39 other migrants had been lost at sea.

The IOM has repeatedly warned of the growing dangers faced by migrants attempting the Mediterranean crossing, especially from North Africa. It continues to call for coordinated international action to prevent further loss of life.
