Russia Warns US Against Striking Iran Amid Fears of Regional Instability
June 18, 2025 — St. Petersburg | Moscow
Russia has urged the United States not to launch military strikes against Iran, warning that such action would dangerously destabilize the Middle East. Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov issued the warning Wednesday during an international economic forum in St. Petersburg.
“This would be a step that radically destabilizes the entire region,” Ryabkov told Interfax, criticizing any consideration of military intervention as “speculative and dangerous.”
Moscow also warned that ongoing Israeli airstrikes risk triggering a nuclear catastrophe. The statement comes amid heightened tensions following days of Israeli attacks on Iranian military targets, including critical infrastructure in Tehran.
Russia, which signed a strategic partnership agreement with Iran in January, has attempted to offer mediation in the Israel-Iran conflict. However, its diplomatic efforts have yet to be accepted by either side.
Despite strained ties with Israel due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, Moscow maintains diplomatic channels with both Tehran and Tel Aviv. Russian officials continue to call for de-escalation and renewed dialogue.
Ryabkov emphasized that direct U.S. involvement could spark a wider regional conflict, urging Washington to act with restraint.
