Erdogan Meets Romanian President in Istanbul to Strengthen Defense and Regional Cooperation
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan held talks with Romanian President Nicusor Dan in Istanbul on Saturday, focusing on bilateral relations as well as regional and global security developments.
The meeting took place at the Istanbul Shipyard Command shortly after the official handover of an offshore patrol vessel, TCG Akhisar/OPV, to the Romanian Naval Forces. The ceremony underscored growing defense cooperation between the two NATO allies.
According to the Turkish Presidency, the two leaders discussed opportunities to expand collaboration in key areas including trade, defense, and security. Erdogan emphasized Türkiye’s commitment to strengthening ties with Romania and continuing joint efforts to deepen strategic cooperation.
A major topic of discussion was security in the Black Sea region. Erdogan highlighted the importance of close coordination between littoral states to maintain stability and safeguard maritime security amid ongoing regional tensions.
He also noted Türkiye’s continued diplomatic efforts aimed at supporting peace initiatives related to Iran and contributing indirectly to broader efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine conflict.
The meeting was held behind closed doors and attended by senior Turkish officials, including the defense minister, interior minister, chief of general staff, communications director, and the president’s chief security adviser.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing cooperation and maintaining regional stability through closer political and military coordination.
