EU foreign policy chief-designate Kaja Kallas reaffirmed the bloc’s commitment to international humanitarian law during her confirmation hearing on Tuesday, emphasizing the importance of protecting civilians in the Middle East conflict. She stressed that civilian infrastructure should not be targeted and called for maximum restraint from all parties involved.
Kallas highlighted the EU’s role as the largest donor to the Palestinian Authority, clarifying the EU’s stance on accusations of double standards. She underscored continued EU support for Palestine, including contributions through the UN agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA).
Kallas reiterated the EU’s demand for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and its ongoing efforts to secure the release of hostages and promote regional stability. She also addressed the issue of illegal Israeli settlements, reaffirming the EU’s opposition to recognizing such settlements and its sanctions against those involved in violent settlement activities. Kallas emphasized the importance of dialogue with Israel through the EU-Israel Association Council and expressed hope for future discussions on key issues.
