EU signals support for Middle East peace talks in Pakistan

Antonio Costa has expressed the European Union’s readiness to support ongoing Middle East peace efforts during a phone conversation with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office, the two leaders reviewed the evolving situation in the Middle East and discussed Pakistan’s diplomatic outreach aimed at promoting regional stability.

Sharif briefed Costa on Islamabad’s recent mediation initiatives, while Costa praised Pakistan’s constructive role in facilitating dialogue and reducing tensions in the region. He reiterated that the EU stands prepared to assist peace efforts “in every possible manner.”

Both sides stressed the importance of sustained diplomacy and continued engagement as essential tools for ensuring long-term regional and global security.

In a separate post on social media, Costa said the international community is closely watching upcoming negotiations between the United States and Iran, expressing hope that the next round of talks would take place in Islamabad.

He also voiced optimism that a diplomatic breakthrough could eventually lead to de-escalation of tensions and the reopening of the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

The EU reaffirmed its broader commitment to supporting all diplomatic initiatives aimed at stabilizing the Middle East.

The call comes as preparations continue for a second round of US-Iran talks expected in Islamabad. Pakistan had previously facilitated the first round of discussions between April 11 and 12, following a short-term ceasefire agreement reached earlier in the month.

Officials in Islamabad have indicated that Iranian representatives may arrive in the Pakistani capital in the coming days as diplomatic efforts continue.
