European Leaders Call for Immediate Ceasefire
A group of European foreign ministers has urged Israel to stop its military operations in Lebanon as violence in the region continues to escalate. The appeal reflects growing concern over the humanitarian situation and regional stability.
Joint Statement Highlights Rising Humanitarian Crisis
In a joint statement issued in Brussels, ministers from 18 countries expressed alarm over worsening conditions in Lebanon. They reported that approximately 1.2 million people have been displaced, representing nearly a quarter of the population.
Furthermore, the statement noted that more than 1,000 people have lost their lives, with civilians, including children, aid workers, and journalists, forming the majority of victims.
Call for De-escalation and Dialogue
The ministers called on all sides, including Israel and Hezbollah, to immediately stop military actions. They stressed the importance of reducing tensions and returning to diplomatic negotiations to prevent further escalation.
At the same time, they urged Israel to respect Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Emphasis on International Law
European officials also highlighted the need to follow international humanitarian law. They stressed key principles such as distinction, proportionality, and precaution, which aim to protect civilians and civilian infrastructure during conflicts.
Support for Lebanon and Humanitarian Efforts
In addition, the ministers emphasized the importance of ensuring humanitarian access and increasing international support for Lebanon. They reaffirmed their commitment to assisting the Lebanese government and security forces in maintaining stability and implementing reforms.
Background of the Conflict
The situation intensified after cross-border attacks involving Hezbollah earlier in March. Since then, Israel has carried out extensive airstrikes and launched a ground operation in southern Lebanon.
