UN Security Council Divided Over US-Israel Strikes on Iran
Global Powers Clash Over Escalating Middle East Conflict
Hamilton, Canada
The UN Security Council remained sharply divided on Thursday over the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran. While Russia and China called for an immediate halt to military strikes, the United States reaffirmed its strong support for Gulf allies.
Russia and China Call for Immediate Ceasefire
Russia’s UN envoy, Vassily Nebenzia, strongly rejected Western criticism and accused them of worsening instability in the region. He stated that the conflict did not emerge suddenly but resulted from what he described as an unprovoked attack by the United States and Israel on Iran.
Moreover, Nebenzia urged all parties to pursue a political solution. He warned that continued escalation could lead to a much larger and more dangerous conflict.
Similarly, China’s envoy, Fu Cong, supported Russia’s position. He emphasized that the use of force by the US and Israel violated the principles of the UN Charter and international law. At the same time, he made it clear that China does not support Iran’s attacks on Gulf countries. He condemned all strikes targeting civilians and non-military areas.
In addition, Fu warned against approving military action through the Security Council. According to him, such approval would legitimize unlawful force and increase tensions further.
United States Defends Its Position
In contrast, US envoy Mike Waltz defended Washington’s actions and criticized Iran’s role in the conflict. He argued that no country should be allowed to threaten global economic stability for political gain.
Furthermore, Waltz assured Gulf nations of continued US support. He stated that the United States stands firmly with its regional partners and remains committed to ensuring a stable and secure future.
