Ex Israeli Minister Criticizes Netanyahu US Dependence

Former Minister Warns Israel Has Lost Global Standing

JERUSALEM: Former Israeli Justice Minister Daniel Friedmann has sharply criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s leadership, arguing that political weakness has left Israel increasingly reliant on the United States and damaged its international standing during the Gaza conflict.

In an opinion article published by the Israeli newspaper Maariv, Friedmann claimed that US President Donald Trump had led both Netanyahu and Israel through what he described as an “unprecedented humiliation,” asserting that Israel’s ability to make independent strategic decisions has been weakened.

Friedmann said the prolonged war in Gaza has significantly altered global perceptions of Israel. While international sympathy initially followed the Hamas-led attacks of October 2023, he argued that continued destruction in Gaza and the humanitarian toll have shifted global opinion against Israel, including among many of its traditional allies.

He also expressed concern over rising violence in the occupied West Bank, criticizing what he described as unequal treatment of Jewish and Palestinian attackers and warning that inflammatory political rhetoric could further isolate Israel internationally and increase the risk of sanctions.

Addressing US-Israel relations, Friedmann alleged that Netanyahu’s fragile political position has allowed Washington to exert greater influence over Israeli policy. He cited previous diplomatic tensions involving Qatar and recent US-led regional initiatives as examples of Israel being forced to accommodate American priorities.

Friedmann further argued that US efforts to ease regional tensions, including negotiations involving Iran and maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz, were pursued with limited regard for Israeli interests. He claimed these developments reflected Israel’s declining influence over key regional decisions.

Despite his criticism, Friedmann acknowledged Trump’s role in helping end the Gaza conflict and facilitating the return of hostages. However, he accused Netanyahu of extending the war primarily to preserve his political position, arguing that the country now faces fundamental questions about its future direction, democratic values, and national independence.
