REYKJAVIK: France has called on the European Union to end imports of goods produced in Israeli settlements located in the occupied West Bank, arguing that continued trade with the settlements undermines efforts to achieve lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians.
Speaking alongside Icelandic Foreign Minister Thorgerdur Katrin Gunnarsdottir during a joint press conference in Reykjavik on Monday, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said Europe should ensure its commercial policies do not support activities considered illegal under international law.
Barrot stated that France believes the EU should stop importing products originating from Israeli settlements, emphasizing that European trade should be consistent with international legal principles and efforts to preserve the prospects of a negotiated peace.
The French minister also reaffirmed Paris’ support for a two-state solution, noting that Iceland recognized the State of Palestine 15 years ago and that France formally followed the same path last year.
Addressing Palestinian politics, Barrot described the parliamentary elections scheduled for November 28 as an important step toward strengthening democratic legitimacy. He said credible legislative elections could help pave the way for future presidential elections in the Palestinian territories.
France’s remarks come as European governments continue to debate policies related to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, including trade, recognition of Palestinian statehood and efforts to revive diplomatic negotiations.
