Herzog Calls for National Day of Prayer and Fasting for Hostages Amid Ongoing Crisis
On Tuesday, Israeli President Isaac Herzog called on the Chief Rabbis of Israel to declare a national day of fasting and prayer for the hostages still held captive amid the ongoing conflict. His appeal came during a swearing-in ceremony for 28 newly appointed rabbinical judges, where he also addressed the moral and spiritual responsibilities of religious leaders in times of war.
Speaking to the new judges, President Herzog emphasized the importance of halachic (Jewish legal) guidance that responds to the evolving ethical and religious questions brought about by the conflict. He cited challenges related to battlefield conduct, religious observance under combat conditions, and complex matters surrounding the deceased and hostages.
“The reality of war raises new questions that demand courage, wisdom, and sensitivity,” Herzog said. “Our halachic leaders must rise to meet these moments with relevance and resolve.”
He then made an urgent plea: “I call upon you to act. I propose you do everything in your power—first and foremost, to declare a general day of fasting and prayer for our brothers and sisters held by terrorists.”
President Herzog stressed the collective responsibility of spiritual leaders to mobilize public sentiment and elevate moral urgency. He also underscored the importance of inclusive leadership, especially in ensuring that women’s voices are heard and represented within religious institutions.
Sephardic Chief Rabbi David Yosef responded affirmatively to the President’s appeal, stating: “We accept the President’s request. In the coming days, we will announce a day of prayer and public outcry on behalf of all those in captivity and for our soldiers on the front lines.”
The President concluded with a heartfelt plea for the healing of the wounded, the safety of soldiers, comfort for bereaved families, and the safe return of displaced communities. He called on all leaders and citizens to do everything possible to secure the release of the hostages and restore peace.
