WASHINGTON, D.C. — After a 15-year hiatus from military service, Dakota Meyer, a celebrated Medal of Honor recipient, has officially rejoined the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. The reenlistment ceremony took place at the Pentagon, where Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth personally readministered the oath of enlistment to the 36-year-old war hero.
Meyer, who was awarded the nation’s highest military honor for his bravery during a deadly 2009 firefight in Kunar Province, Afghanistan, will resume his service as an infantry sergeant. Despite his distinguished record, Meyer requested no special privileges and emphasized his desire to serve like any other Marine.
“I’ve never stopped thinking about coming back,” Meyer stated, explaining that his deep love for America and belief that he still had more to give pushed him to reenlist. He passed both physical and combat fitness tests to qualify for the reserves, demonstrating the same dedication that once earned him the Medal of Honor.
Defense Secretary Hegseth praised Meyer’s return, calling it an inspiring example of continued patriotism and service. “You’re never too experienced or too accomplished to contribute,” Hegseth told him. He also acknowledged how rare it is for a decorated veteran like Meyer to return to active reserve duty, describing it as a powerful symbol of commitment.
Meyer clarified that he requested no special treatment, stating, “I wanted the same opportunities as any other sergeant. I’ll do whatever the nation asks of me.”
Hegseth noted that Meyer’s reenlistment aligns with a growing trend of increased enlistments, partially fueled by a renewed spirit of service across the country.
Reflecting on the moment, Meyer emphasized that while titles may change, the core mission remains constant: “To lead with integrity, serve with honor, and stand firmly for what’s right.”
Originally awarded the Medal of Honor by President Barack Obama in 2011, Meyer remains one of the youngest living recipients of the prestigious award. Now, his decision to return to uniform showcases a powerful narrative of duty, humility, and patriotism in action.
