Russia Claims Ukraine Launches Counterattack in Kursk

Ukraine Strikes Back with Counterattack in Kursk

MOSCOW: Russia reported on Sunday that Ukraine had launched a “counterattack” in the Kursk region, a key battleground since Kyiv initiated a ground offensive last August. While the full extent of Ukraine’s progress remains unclear, pro-Kremlin military sources suggested a fresh and forceful assault was underway.

The counterattack marks a critical moment in the ongoing conflict, with both sides seeking to strengthen their positions ahead of US President-elect Donald Trump’s return to the White House. According to Russia’s defense ministry, the assault began at 9:00 AM Moscow time, aiming to halt Russian advances in the Kursk direction. Ukrainian forces reportedly used tanks, armored vehicles, and demolition units to push toward the village of Berdin, northeast of Sudzha.

Despite initial pressure on Russian forces, pro-Kremlin military bloggers remained confident in Moscow’s ability to repel the attack, forecasting that Ukraine’s offensive would intensify in the coming days. Images showing Ukrainian armored vehicles moving through the snow were shared by military commentators, adding to the tension.

Ukrainian officials have remained tight-lipped about the offensive, with some lawmakers suggesting a more strategic silence until the operation concludes. Meanwhile, Ukrainian leaders expressed satisfaction with the counterattack, celebrating the move as a significant blow to Russia.

The fight for Kursk, which has seen fluctuating control since Ukraine’s initial push in August 2024, is far from over. Both sides continue to brace for the next phase in this long-standing and unpredictable war.
