The U.S. Senate has confirmed Stephen A. Feinberg as the 36th deputy defense secretary in a 59-40 vote on March 14, 2025. Feinberg, a businessman and former chair of President Donald Trump’s Intelligence Advisory Board, will oversee the Pentagon’s day-to-day operations, budget management, and defense priorities.
Following his confirmation, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth welcomed Feinberg via social media, stating, “His appointment is well-deserved, and he’s the right man for the job.”
During his Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on February 25, Feinberg highlighted key issues, including financial accountability and the defense industrial base. He pledged to enhance fiscal oversight by implementing a “war room” strategy to scrutinize Pentagon expenditures, aiming to help the Department of Defense pass an audit—one of Hegseth’s top priorities.
Feinberg also emphasized the need to strengthen the U.S. defense supply chain, citing workforce improvements and closer collaboration with the private sector. He argued that government officials should better understand corporate operations to ensure efficient military procurement.
After his confirmation, Feinberg was sworn in at the Pentagon by Robert G. Salesses. His leadership is expected to focus on financial discipline, industrial base resilience, and operational efficiency as he assumes his new role in the Department of Defense.
