Additional interceptors vital to counter attacks

Ukraine Urges NATO for Increased Air Defense Support Amid Ongoing Strikes

Defense Minister Meets NATO Leadership in Brussels

Ukraine’s Defense Minister, Denys Shmyhal, met NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Brussels on Monday, pressing for enhanced air defense support as Russian missile and drone attacks persist.

Shmyhal expressed gratitude to Rutte for his “leadership and support” and provided an update on developments at the frontlines, emphasizing Ukraine’s urgent defense priorities.

Focus on Strengthening Air Defenses

During the talks, Shmyhal stressed that boosting Ukraine’s air defense systems remains a critical need. “To counter Russia’s missile and drone attacks, additional air defense systems and interceptors are essential,” he said. He also highlighted the ongoing importance of the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) initiative, which ensures stable supplies of ammunition and equipment.

Aligning With NATO Standards

Shmyhal noted that Ukraine is continuing efforts to modernize its defense sector to meet NATO standards. He added that the country is actively advancing joint projects with allied partners to strengthen military readiness.

About the PURL Initiative

The PURL initiative, a US-NATO program, enables European and Canadian NATO member states to fund the purchase of American-made weapons for Ukraine. The program plays a key role in maintaining the country’s defense capabilities amid ongoing conflict.
