US, Europe and Ukraine Hold Talks on Next Steps Toward Ending War
Envoy Says Discussions Focused on Security and Peace Process
The United States, European partners, and Ukraine have held talks to discuss the next steps toward ending the war in Ukraine, according to US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff.
Witkoff said US officials took part in a “productive call” with European national security advisers and Ukraine’s chief negotiator to review progress and outline practical ways to move the peace effort forward.
Key Participants in the Discussions
The envoy said he joined Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, in talks with senior European officials. Participants included Jonathan Powell from the United Kingdom, Emmanuel Bonne from France, Gunter Sautter from Germany, and Rustem Umerov from Ukraine.
Focus on Security and Coordination
According to Witkoff, the discussions centered on advancing President Trump’s peace initiative through concrete measures. These included strengthening security guarantees for Ukraine and developing effective coordination mechanisms to reduce the risk of renewed conflict.
He added that the participants also exchanged views on a proposed prosperity package for Ukraine. The plan aims to support the country’s economic recovery and long-term reconstruction through a shared development roadmap.
Talks to Continue in the New Year
“Many additional details were discussed, and we will continue this important coordination in the New Year,” Witkoff said in a statement posted on the social media platform X.
Recent Trump–Zelenskyy Meeting
The talks followed a meeting on Sunday between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Florida. Trump described the meeting as “wonderful” and said only a few issues remained to be resolved before reaching a potential peace agreement.
