WHO Condemns Israeli Strikes on Gaza Hospital

The World Health Organization (WHO) has condemned the recent shelling of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, calling the attack “unacceptable.” The Dec. 7 assault severely damaged the hospital and disrupted crucial medical services. According to hospital officials, the attack resulted in injuries to both health workers and patients, and destroyed essential infrastructure, including water, oxygen, and fuel tanks. A fire was also sparked within the hospital.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus highlighted the dire consequences of the ongoing attacks, stating that the hospital’s loss of electricity has further hindered its ability to provide care. He emphasized that these repeated assaults are depriving the people of northern Gaza of the already limited health services they rely on.

Tedros called for immediate action to protect patients, health workers, and medical facilities in conflict zones, urging a halt to hostilities, greater access for humanitarian aid, and support for the repair of damaged facilities.

The Kamal Adwan Hospital has been a critical source of medical care in Gaza, operating under difficult conditions with ongoing shortages of supplies, staff, and power. Its destruction further complicates efforts to provide healthcare amidst the conflict.

Humanitarian organizations and international leaders continue to call for a ceasefire to allow for the delivery of much-needed aid. The ongoing violence in Gaza has resulted in the deaths of over 44,700 people since the conflict escalated on Oct. 7, 2023. Israel faces multiple international legal challenges, including charges of war crimes and genocide related to the ongoing violence in Gaza.
