Why Germany Faces Early Elections?

Germany’s ruling coalition, formed by the SPD, Greens, and FDP, has faced mounting tensions since its inception. The coalition’s collapse began on November 6 when Chancellor Scholz dismissed Finance Minister Christian Lindner, a key FDP member. The coalition had struggled over conflicting priorities, including defense and energy spending. While the SPD and Greens pushed for more state investment, Lindner’s FDP rejected this in favor of strict fiscal discipline and tax cuts for the wealthy. With the government’s instability apparent, Scholz has agreed to hold snap elections on February 23, 2025, ahead of the originally scheduled vote in September.
