Heavy snowfall forecast intensifies across southern Saskatchewan region

Forecasters in Canada have revised snowfall expectations upward as a winter storm moves further south than initially predicted, bringing heavier accumulation to parts of Saskatchewan.

Environment and Climate Change Canada meteorologist Danielle Desjardins said Swift Current could now receive between 10 and 20 centimetres of snow, a sharp increase from earlier estimates of around five centimetres.

The heaviest snowfall is expected to develop later in the day, with intense bands building through the afternoon. While conditions are likely to improve overnight as precipitation eases, cold temperatures may continue to create hazardous road conditions.

Authorities have already issued advisories discouraging travel on several highways south and southeast of Swift Current. Officials warn that road conditions could deteriorate significantly, particularly along the Trans Canada Highway, where closures remain a possibility.

Residents are being urged to postpone travel plans where possible until weather conditions stabilize.
