Out-of-Control Wildfire Prompts Evacuation Alert in British Columbia’s East Kootenay
CRANBROOK, British Columbia: Residents in parts of southeastern British Columbia have been placed on evacuation alert after a rapidly spreading wildfire prompted officials to warn that conditions could change quickly.
The Lussier River wildfire, discovered on Saturday, is burning approximately 65 kilometres north of Cranbrook and has expanded to roughly 1.15 square kilometres, according to the B.C. Wildfire Service (BCWS).
The Regional District of East Kootenay has issued an evacuation alert affecting 72 properties near Premier Lake, advising residents to be prepared to leave their homes on short notice if fire conditions worsen.
Firefighters have deployed two ground crews along with aerial resources to contain the blaze. Authorities said there is currently no immediate threat to homes or critical infrastructure, but crews continue to monitor the situation closely as the fire remains out of control.
Emergency officials are urging residents in the affected area to stay informed, prepare essential belongings and follow evacuation instructions should an evacuation order be issued.
The wildfire is one of several incidents being monitored across British Columbia as dry conditions continue to increase the risk of fast-moving fires during the summer season. Authorities will continue assessing the fire’s behaviour while working to prevent it from spreading further.
