WINNIPEG: A 16-year-old has been charged with multiple offences, including animal cruelty, following the death of a cat in Winnipeg, according to local police.
The Winnipeg Police Service said officers responded to reports of an incident involving a youth and a cat at approximately 9:20 p.m. Monday in the area of Main Street between Alexander and Higgins avenues.
When officers arrived, they located the teenager in possession of a knife and found the cat dead nearby, police said.
Investigators allege the youth had brought the cat to the location inside a plastic bag before the animal was fatally injured. Authorities subsequently arrested the suspect at the scene.
The teenager has been charged with killing or injuring an animal, causing unnecessary suffering to an animal, and possession of a weapon.
Police also laid additional charges, including three counts of failing to comply with a sentence and four counts of failing to comply with the conditions of a release order.
The accused remains in custody as the investigation continues.
