US Envoy Expresses Optimism Over Ukraine Peace Negotiations
ISTANBUL
Steve Witkoff, a special envoy for the United States, said Tuesday that Washington remains hopeful about ongoing peace negotiations involving United States, Russia and Ukraine.
Although negotiators postponed the next round of trilateral talks until next week, Witkoff said discussions continue to move forward with clear purpose.
Speaking to CNBC, he stressed that the conflict must come to an end. He added that the United States intends to remain optimistic while pushing for a peaceful settlement.
Progress Reported in Geneva Talks
Witkoff noted that negotiators achieved more progress during recent meetings in Geneva than in the previous four years combined. According to him, Ukrainian representatives played an important role in advancing the discussions.
However, he also admitted that the negotiations have taken longer than Donald Trump initially expected. Despite the delay, Witkoff pointed to new signs that could move the process closer to peace.
Signs of War Fatigue
Both sides, he said, appear increasingly tired after years of fighting. This growing exhaustion could mark what he described as a potential “inflection point” that might open the door to a peace agreement.
Trump has previously said he hopes to end the war within his first year in office. Negotiations among the three countries have continued since early 2025.
No Ceasefire Request in Trump Putin Call
Meanwhile, the Kremlin reported that Trump did not ask for a ceasefire during a phone call Monday with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Russian officials also said the leaders did not set a new date for the next round of trilateral talks.
Despite these uncertainties, diplomats continue efforts to reach a negotiated settlement.
