Young Canadian Talent Reaches Global Stage
A 12-year-old golfer from the Greater Toronto Area has earned a place at the prestigious Augusta National Golf Club. Audrey Lu will represent Canada in the Drive, Chip and Putt Championship finals, held ahead of the Masters Tournament in Georgia.
Lu is one of four Canadian participants and will compete in the Girls 12–13 category. The event features 80 young golfers selected from across the United States and beyond.
Hard Work Leads to Major Opportunity
Lu expressed pride in her achievement, highlighting years of consistent training and dedication. She emphasized that daily practice played a key role in reaching this level.
The competition includes players aged seven to fifteen and focuses on essential golf skills such as driving, chipping, and putting.
Early Passion for the Game
Lu began playing golf at the age of five after her mother, Meng Xiao, enrolled her in a summer camp. From the beginning, she showed strong interest and natural ability.
She recalled feeling motivated to improve each day, especially after realizing her potential to hit long shots. Over time, she developed a deep appreciation for the sport and its challenges.
Strong Family Support Behind Success
Lu’s family has played a central role in her journey. Her father has served as her caddy for several years, while her younger brother regularly attends her tournaments.
Her family, including relatives in China, continues to support and encourage her progress.
Resilience and Determination Shine Through
Lu’s family moved to Canada in 2015. Her mother believes Lu’s determined personality helped her succeed in golf.
She described her daughter as highly resilient, noting that Lu trains and competes in all weather conditions. Her commitment, she said, reflects both discipline and passion.
At one point, Lu told her mother she felt proud for never giving up on her dream. That moment, Xiao explained, confirmed that golf had become a lifelong journey for her daughter.
Recognition from Local Community
In October, Steven Del Duca honored Lu with an achievement certificate. She became the first athlete from Vaughan to qualify for this prestigious competition.
