Zohran Mamdani Sworn in as New York City Mayor
New York City – Zohran Mamdani has officially been sworn in as the mayor of New York City, becoming the first Muslim mayor and the youngest person in generations to hold the office in the United States’ largest city.
Historic Inauguration Ceremony
Mamdani, a Democrat, took his oath just after midnight on Thursday at the old City Hall subway station in Manhattan, one of the city’s original stations noted for its arched ceilings. He placed his hand on a Quran while swearing in.
“This is truly the honour and the privilege of a lifetime,” Mamdani said following the ceremony, administered by New York Attorney General Letitia James, a close political ally.
Public Celebration to Follow
Mamdani will be sworn in again at a public ceremony at City Hall at 1pm (18:00 GMT), where US Senator Bernie Sanders, one of his political inspirations, will administer the oath.
The mayor’s team has planned a public block party on Broadway’s “Canyon of Heroes,” a famous parade route known for ticker-tape celebrations. The event marks the start of what is expected to be one of the most high-profile and demanding political roles in the country.
