Preparations are in full swing for the 2024 Kumbh Mela, set to be the largest religious gathering in history, drawing an estimated 400 million pilgrims over six weeks. This ancient Hindu festival will take place from January 13 to February 26 in Prayagraj, where the holy Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers converge. The event coincides with a rare planetary alignment, adding to its significance.
The Kumbh Mela is a sacred occasion for devotees to purify themselves and seek spiritual liberation, or “moksha.” Authorities are constructing a temporary city spanning 4,000 hectares (about 15 square miles) to accommodate the massive influx of pilgrims. This sprawling city will include 150,000 toilets, 68,000 LED lights, and enormous community kitchens capable of feeding 50,000 people at a time.
“We’re expecting 350 to 400 million attendees, so you can imagine the scale of preparations,” said Vivek Chaturvedi, the festival’s spokesperson. “What makes this event unique is its size and the fact that no one is invited—people come purely out of faith.”
Rooted in Hindu mythology, the Kumbh Mela commemorates the battle between deities and demons over a pitcher of nectar that grants immortality, with four drops falling to Earth, one of which landed in Prayagraj. The festival rotates among four cities, but the Prayagraj event is the largest. This year’s “Maha” Kumbh Mela follows the 2019 “Ardh” Kumbh, which drew 240 million.
The festival will kick off on January 13 with the first ceremonial dip led by the naked naga sadhus—wandering ascetics—who are believed to hold great spiritual power. “Whatever you long for in your heart, you get at Kumbh,” said 90-year-old sadhu Digambar Ramesh Giri.
Beyond spiritual preparations, Prayagraj has seen extensive infrastructure upgrades, with posters of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath prominently displayed, reflecting the strong political and religious connection in India. The Kumbh Mela remains a powerful symbol of faith, attracting millions to participate in one of the world’s most awe-inspiring gatherings.
