Ceasefire Talks Progress as Hamas Submits Response to US-Brokered Deal
GAZA CITY:
Hamas has officially responded to a US-backed ceasefire initiative aimed at halting the months-long conflict in Gaza, marking a significant development in the ongoing diplomatic efforts. The group signaled readiness to move forward, but attached key conditions, including the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, unrestricted humanitarian aid, and a permanent end to the war.
After holding internal consultations, Hamas submitted its formal reply to mediators. While the group stopped short of fully accepting the deal, a source within Hamas’ political bureau described the response as “positive,” provided it ensures a lasting ceasefire and Israeli disengagement from the territory.
The proposal, brokered by the United States and supported by regional stakeholders, aims to pave the way for a multi-phase truce, including the release of hostages held in Gaza and the gradual easing of the Israeli blockade.
Hamas’ response comes amid heightened international pressure for a diplomatic resolution. The group also highlighted its demand for comprehensive aid delivery to alleviate the deepening humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
As the negotiations gain momentum, mediators hope that Hamas’ conditional openness will bring both sides closer to an agreement, potentially ending one of the most intense escalations in recent years.
