Libya’s Tripoli-based government has confirmed the death of Army Chief Mohammed al-Haddad in a plane crash near Turkey’s capital, Ankara. The accident also claimed the lives of four of his aides, officials said on Tuesday.

In an official statement, the government led by Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh described the incident as “a tragic loss to the nation, the military institution, and the Libyan people.”

Government pays tribute

The statement praised the victims for their service and commitment, saying they served Libya “with sincerity and dedication” and stood as examples of discipline, responsibility, and national loyalty.

Moreover, the government expressed condolences to the families of those killed and reaffirmed its support for the armed forces during this difficult time.

Crash details confirmed by Turkish officials

Earlier, Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed that authorities had located the wreckage of a Falcon 50 jet south of Haymana, near Ankara. The aircraft had been en route to Tripoli when it went down.

Investigators are continuing to examine the cause of the crash, while both Libyan and Turkish officials remain in contact as the inquiry progresses.
