Türkiye Moves to Reduce Foreign Tech Dependence

Erdogan Leads Cybersecurity Strategy Discussions

Türkiye Introduces Digital Sovereignty Strategy to Strengthen Cybersecurity

Türkiye presented its Digital Sovereignty Strategy to the Cybersecurity Board on Tuesday, aiming to enhance national control over its digital infrastructure, reduce reliance on foreign technologies and expand domestic technological capabilities, according to the Communications Directorate.

The board meeting, chaired by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, examined how geopolitical developments at the global and regional levels are influencing cybersecurity. Officials also reviewed recent cyber incidents worldwide and assessed the changing nature of digital threats.

Discussions highlighted the impact of artificial intelligence on cyberattacks, particularly their growing scale, speed and complexity. Members also examined the security risks posed by algorithmic manipulation and digital influence campaigns, which can affect public opinion, national security and society’s ability to withstand external pressures.

The board identified digital sovereignty as a key national security priority. Protecting critical infrastructure, improving cyber resilience, strengthening deterrence capabilities and achieving greater technological independence were emphasised as essential elements of Türkiye’s security and development policies.

The newly presented strategy seeks to reduce dependence on foreign sources for critical technologies while expanding the country’s domestic technology sector. The board agreed that relevant institutions would implement measures within their respective responsibilities, with progress monitored and regularly evaluated.

Officials further stressed the need for stronger coordination between government agencies, shared risk assessment mechanisms and consistent implementation of cybersecurity measures. They also reaffirmed their commitment to closer cooperation among public institutions, private companies and academic organisations to establish a comprehensive national cybersecurity ecosystem.
