UN Commission Reports Over 1000 Palestinian Deaths in West Bank

The UN Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and Israel reported on Tuesday that Israeli forces had killed 1,080 Palestinians in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, between October 7, 2023, and September 30, 2026.

Presenting the findings during a hybrid briefing, Indian commission member Srinivasan Muralidhar said the documented fatalities included at least 784 men, 237 boys, 22 women and seven girls. He added that Israeli forces had injured another 10,009 Palestinians during the same period.

The commission urged the international community to take stronger action against Israel’s occupation and settlement activities. It called on countries not to recognise the occupation or settlements as lawful and to avoid providing political, military or economic assistance that could help sustain them.

Muralidhar stressed that meaningful international pressure, particularly from the UN Security Council, was necessary to ensure compliance with international law and address the continuing crisis in Gaza and the West Bank. He also called on international actors, especially the United States, to reconsider their assistance to Israel.

Australian commission member Chris Sidoti said the commission’s legal assessment had found Israeli political and military authorities responsible for crimes against humanity in the West Bank, including extermination, persecution, torture, rape and other forms of sexual violence. He also referred to the alleged deliberate targeting of Palestinian civilians.

Another commission member, Florence Mumba of Zambia, accused Israeli authorities and settlers of seeking to expand control over Palestinian land and displace residents through violence, mistreatment and other abuses, including violence against children.

The report comes amid escalating Israeli military operations and settler violence in the occupied West Bank, including East Jerusalem, since the outbreak of the war in Gaza in October 2023.
