In a late-night address on Tuesday, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev emphasized that the South Caucasus must become a region of peace and cooperation. His remarks came in response to growing concerns over Armenia’s escalating militarization, which he warned could threaten regional stability. Aliyev stated that Azerbaijan would not remain passive in the face of these developments, underscoring the need for diplomacy but also readiness to defend national interests.
Aliyev pointed out that Armenia’s increasing military buildup is unjustifiable and represents a “new threat” to the region. He referred to Armenia’s defeat in the 2020 conflict as a turning point that should have guided them toward a peaceful future, but instead, they have continued down a dangerous path. Reaffirming Azerbaijan’s military and economic strength, Aliyev confidently declared that no regional military force could match Azerbaijan’s power.
Amid ongoing global conflicts, Aliyev highlighted that Azerbaijan has enjoyed peace, security, and stability, stressing the importance of maintaining this progress. As celebrations unfolded across Azerbaijan to mark both the New Year and the Day of Solidarity of World Azerbaijanis, thousands gathered for fireworks and festivities in Baku, although some planned events were canceled following a tragic plane crash in Kazakhstan.
Aliyev’s speech reflects Azerbaijan’s growing influence and determination to ensure peace in the region, calling on Armenia to reconsider its militaristic approach for the sake of lasting stability.
