Bridges Collapse in Bryansk and Kursk Provinces, Seven Dead Sixty-Nine Injured

Two bridges in Russia’s western border regions collapsed on Saturday, killing seven people and injuring sixty-nine. In Bryansk Oblast, a highway bridge near Novozybkov gave way during evening traffic, sending multiple vehicles into the Desna River. At the same time, a regional road bridge over the Seym River near Lgov in Kursk Oblast collapsed under the weight of buses and private cars. Emergency teams rescued survivors and transported the injured to nearby hospitals.

Initial statements from Russia’s Investigative Committee attributed both collapses to explosions, but a revised briefing later omitted any mention of blasts, prompting questions about the true cause. Governors in Bryansk and Kursk have ordered immediate inspections of all local bridges and pledged support to victims’ families. President Vladimir Putin directed federal agencies to investigate structural integrity and maintenance records, while provisional ferry services and temporary crossings are being arranged to restore critical transport links.

Authorities are examining debris for signs of sabotage, design flaws, or maintenance failures. Forensic teams, alongside transport and security officials, will analyze bridge materials, inspect welds, and review inspection logs. Meanwhile, residents face longer commutes and disrupted supply lines as reconstruction plans are developed.
