Chanukah Hope Shines for Hostages

President Isaac Herzog marked the first night of Chanukah by lighting the initial candle at Beit HaLochem in Tel Aviv, joined by IDF soldiers and an injured veteran. The event became a heartfelt plea for the return of over 100 hostages held by Hamas in Gaza.

Herzog passionately addressed the somber reality: “This Chanukah, our brothers and sisters remain in the grip of Hamas terrorists. Their lives are in clear and growing danger, with every passing day increasing the peril they face.” He revealed convening a medical-focused conference at his residence, hearing testimonies from freed hostages and experts, underscoring the urgency of their condition.

Describing Hamas as a “cruel enemy,” Herzog emphasized the psychological warfare they employ in negotiations. Yet, he called for relentless creativity, determination, and responsibility, urging Israel’s leadership to act decisively. “Bring them home—alive or laid to rest with dignity. It’s our duty and responsibility.”

In a stirring appeal, Herzog connected the mission to Chanukah’s spirit: “Bring the miracle of Chanukah to our people, especially those we failed to protect on October 7. Every life saved is as if an entire world is redeemed.”

The President’s words were a rallying cry, blending tradition, hope, and resolve amid a national crisis.
