Canada deficit forecast revised lower in economic update

Canada’s federal government has revised its fiscal outlook downward, projecting a smaller deficit than previously expected in its latest economic update.

The April fiscal statement estimates the 2025–26 budget deficit at $66.9 billion, which is $11.5 billion lower than the figure outlined in the November federal budget. The adjustment reflects updated economic assumptions and revised revenue expectations.

The update is part of the government’s routine financial reporting process, in which officials present mid-year revisions to the national budget. These updates typically reassess economic conditions and introduce new policy measures or spending commitments where necessary.

While the revised projection indicates improved fiscal performance compared to earlier estimates, the deficit remains significant as Ottawa continues to balance public spending priorities with economic pressures.
