Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken discussed efforts toward an immediate ceasefire and stabilizing the situation in Gaza and Lebanon during a recent phone call.
According to a statement from Egypt’s Foreign Ministry on Saturday, both sides emphasized the importance of securing a ceasefire in Gaza as part of a broader agreement that would also facilitate the release of hostages. Abdelatty underscored the need for Israel to halt its escalation and allow unhindered humanitarian aid into Gaza, stressing the urgency of unconditional support for civilians.
Discussions also covered initiatives for a swift ceasefire in Lebanon, with Abdelatty condemning “ongoing Israeli violations and infringements on Lebanese sovereignty.”
Last month, Israel launched an extensive air assault in Lebanon, targeting what it claims are Hezbollah positions in a significant escalation from the cross-border confrontations that have spanned over a year. The conflict further intensified on October 1, when Israel expanded its operations into southern Lebanon.
Since the onset of its offensive in Gaza more than a year ago, Israel’s actions have resulted in nearly 43,000 deaths and over 100,000 injuries, according to official sources.
