The UN General Assembly on Tuesday passed a resolution declaring Israel’s ongoing occupation and de facto annexation of the Syrian Golan “illegal.” The resolution calls on Israel to withdraw to the June 4, 1967, border.

The draft, prepared by Egypt, received 123 votes in favor, seven against, and 41 abstentions.

Resolution Highlights

The resolution states that Israel’s decision on Dec. 14, 1981, to apply its laws and administration in the occupied Syrian Golan is “null and void” and has no legal validity.

It demands that Israel withdraw from all occupied areas of the Syrian Golan to the June 4, 1967, line in accordance with previous UN Security Council resolutions. The resolution also notes that Israel’s continued occupation and de facto annexation hinder the achievement of a just, comprehensive, and lasting peace in the region.
