Mass Seal Deaths Reported in Dagestan

Over 320 Seals Found Dead on Caspian Coast

Caspian Sea Coast Sees Over 320 Seal Deaths in Dagestan

Dead Seals Found Along Dagestan Shore

More than 320 dead seals were found Tuesday along the Caspian Sea coast in Dagestan, according to a report by the Tass news agency. Emergency teams discovered the animals between the Sulak River estuary and the Terek River.

Officials warned that the number may rise as search efforts continue.

Deaths Linked to Annual Migration

The Dagestan Ministry of Natural Resources explained that seal deaths occur regularly during the species’ migration period. Scientists have studied the pattern for years and continue to monitor the situation.

Possible Cause: Gas Emissions From Seabed

Experts believe the main cause of the recent deaths is asphyxiation. They say the seals may have passed through zones where strong natural gas emissions rise from the seabed. These emissions often link to seismic activity in the region.
