Former Prime Minister Imran Khan of Pakistan, currently incarcerated, accused jail authorities on Wednesday of maltreatment, claiming he is treated “worse than animals.” He alleged, “I was tortured by being confined in a cage and deprived of electricity for five days, leaving me in total darkness. I spent ten days in my cell, and visits from family, doctors, or lawyers were blocked for weeks.” Khan made these statements to reporters and his legal team in a makeshift courtroom at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi, shared via a post on his party’s X account.
In response, the government and jail officials denied his allegations, asserting that Khan is receiving “all facilities” according to prison regulations. “They want to break me through this torture and hardship, but I will stand firm for the genuine freedom of the Pakistani nation,” Khan stated, having been jailed for over a year. He criticized both ruling and opposition lawmakers for recently voting on a judiciary-related constitutional amendment, claiming they “betrayed Pakistan by undermining the foundations of our Constitution.” Khan also raised concerns about the alleged abduction of his lawyer, Intazar Panjutha, who has been missing for weeks. The former cricket star was ousted from power in April 2022 through a no-confidence vote, just over a year before his five-year term was to end.
