Severe Weather Kills 89 in Uttar Pradesh

At least 89 people have died in severe weather conditions in India’s northern state of Uttar Pradesh following powerful storms that brought heavy rain, strong winds and lightning across multiple districts, officials confirmed on Thursday.

State authorities said 53 others were injured as extreme weather swept through the region on Wednesday, causing widespread damage and disruption.

According to a statement posted on social media platform X by the state Relief Commissioner, the deaths occurred due to “adverse weather conditions,” while district officials continue to assess the full extent of the impact. Emergency funds are being coordinated to support affected areas.

Initial reports indicated 15 deaths in Bhadohi district, where strong winds caused trees and electricity poles to collapse, leading to multiple fatalities. Additional casualties were later confirmed as the storm intensified.

In Fatehpur district, officials reported nine deaths and 16 injuries as another severe weather system struck the area. Local authorities said emergency teams have been deployed and are actively monitoring conditions on the ground.

Further fatalities were reported in Budaun district, where five people died, while one death was confirmed in Sonbhadra, according to the Press Trust of India.

Law enforcement agencies and administrative teams continue to coordinate rescue and relief operations, with officials emphasizing continuous monitoring of affected regions.

Meanwhile, rainfall was also recorded in parts of the capital New Delhi, where weather disruptions impacted flight operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport, causing delays and logistical challenges.
