Virat Kohli has been fined 20% of his match fee and handed a demerit point following a heated clash with Australia’s debutant Sam Konstas during the opening day of the fourth Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The incident occurred after Konstas, who had been frustrating the Indian fielders with an aggressive 60, collided with Kohli as the latter walked past him at the end of the 10th over. This shoulder bump sparked a verbal exchange, with Kohli visibly angered and moving towards Konstas before being quickly separated by umpire Michael Gough and Australia’s Usman Khawaja.
Despite the altercation, Konstas remained unfazed, stating, “Whatever happens on the field stays on the field.” The incident has been classified as a Level 2 offence by the ICC, which addresses inappropriate or intentional physical contact.
Earlier in the day, Konstas had impressed with his bold shot selection, including reverse scoops, and helped Australia reach 311/6 by stumps. Kohli’s actions were criticized by former India captain Ravi Shastri, who called them “absolutely unnecessary.” Meanwhile, Jasprit Bumrah continued his strong form with the ball, claiming 3/75.
